MASTER THESIS

The end goal.

  • It is recommended that you start early in looking for an idea, while having your classes. You will need a dedicated and trusted supervisor for this and you can choose any professor within IGC/HSB and even external. Documentation will be made once it is finalized.
  • If you have plans to have your thesis in a company make sure you have good German (B1/B2). And you have to start looking for prospective companies early on and build good connections. Unless you have existing connections that can put you in a company, research/thesis internships will be difficult to find. Most thesis internship positions are evolved from regular internships so you have to start from step zero.
  • This is a list.

University Language Center (SZHB) - Sprachenzentrum Bremen

All students enrolled in public universities are eligible to apply to the SZHB Bremen. As an enrolled student, the courses are significantly cheaper than private options. Register early (look at the website news for the dates of registration). Spots fill in the first week as per experience.

Student Review: SZHB has 3 branches/locations for classes (University of Bremen GW2, City University of Applied Sciences Werderstraße, and Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences).
  • Unless the course is specifically catered to a DEGREE PROGRAM, any student can enroll in any class (HSB Student can enroll at a class located in uni Bremen or Bremerhaven).
  • SEMESTER COURSES are normally 2X A WEEK but some can be 1x a week. The schedule can vary but are normally Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.
  • INTENSIVE COURSES are offered in between semesters (normally during "lecture-free" period (last month of the semester)), but they are offered/registration opens at the same day the regular semester courses open.
  • IF YOU HAVE GERMAN BACKGROUND PLEASE TAKE THE PLACEMENT TEST. Try to learn a bit more so that you can skip A1.1. and be placed in A1.2. or A2.1+ classes.
  • In my opinion, it's not worth it to send 100+ euros for an A1 class, try to learn on your own or with study groups if you cannot secure an A1 slot at SZHB.
Student Review: Something

Free Online Options

  • Deutsche Welle (DW Learn German): excellent structured free course, A1–B1
  • Duolingo: supplement only; not sufficient as standalone
  • Goethe Institut Online: quality materials, some free resources

Paid Intensive Courses

  • Goethe Institut: gold standard, expensive (~€300–800/course) but recognized
  • Campus German: has intensive courses and a free language cafe
Tip: Always inquire for Student Packages, Student Discounts, etc!

(Home Country) Paid Intensive Courses

  • Also consider contacting your home country language schools as some may have German-Timezone classes with schedule you are more comfortable with.

Tandem & Exchange / Language Cafes

Many universities run a Tandem program where you teach your native language to a German speaker, they teach you German. Completely free and often the fastest way to get conversational.

  • Check the International Office or language center for sign-ups
  • Apps: Tandem, etc.
  • Campus German offers free language cafes that are hosted weekly.

Other Languages Offered

SZHB centers typically offer Spanish, French, Mandarin, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, and others. Same registration rules apply. Check your SZHB portal.

Class Schedule Analysis/Review

Most classes are scheduled and set in blocks. However, some classes can be scattered across the entire semester. This means, while you can normally expect some order, you cannot actually have a "fixed" schedule with "consistent" shifts for a job.

There is also the consideration of changes in semesters, some professors may be available on this or that day/week and it can very greatly from each batch.

Normally, Fridays don't have a class but we have experienced Friday Classes to. Sometimes it's Mondays or Wednesdays that don't have class. It really depends.

Part-time work analysis

Based on this typical week, the best windows for part-time or Werkstudent work are Fridays and Weekends. Most students working part-time target 16–20 hours/week spread across these slots.

Monthly Cost Breakdown

Category Low (€) Mid (€) High (€)
Rent (incl. utilities) ~300~650~700+
Groceries + Mensa* ~50~100~300+
Transport (Deutschlandticket / Semester ticket) ******
Health insurance ~150??
Phone plan ~5~10~20+
Going out / social ~50~150~300+
Books / software ~10~30~80
Total estimate

* Mensa meals are to be covered by your own funds. If you plan to eat every lunch here, you would have about ~15–30€ per week on average, which is about ~60–120€ per month.

** Deutschlandticket is available to all enrolled and valid students, however, this does NOT include ICE Trains, fees for bike space, or pets. If you are a newly enrolled student, your Deutschlandticket might not be available/valid yet as it will start on the official semester start date.

Student Discounts Worth Knowing

  • Museen, Kinos, Theater: Check the website for student discounts or free for students. Our enrollment and Student ID includes a "Kultursemesterticket". Though ther eis no QR Code, simply showing your ID for verification is enough.
  • GitHub Student Developer Pack: Our email domain "@stud.hs-bremen.de" gives access to a range of developer tools and resources at reduced or no cost.

Side Income Options

  • Working student (Werkstudent)/Minijob/Part-time Job: up to 20h/week during semester, tax-advantaged. Most common and recommended. Look for HiWi positions at university too.
  • Freelancing: allowed but check visa conditions if you're a non-EU student
  • Research assistant (HiWi): university jobs, flexible, ~€13–15/hr, good CV material
Student Tip: If you have plans to have your Master Thesis in a company, it's best to have student jobs related to company internships.
Non-EU note: Check your visa conditions. Student visas usually allow 120 full days or 240 half-days per year of work.

Funding & Scholarships

  • IGC DOES NOT OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS: Already in the website, it does not provide financial assistance.
What is the ISA (International Student Assistance) Team?
They are IGC's dedicated team to assist international students with the administrative onboarding process. They can assist you with visa questions, housing resources, and general questions about living in Bremen.
  • ENROLLMENT IS WITH ISA. The moment you have secured your visa and flight, ensure to book an appointment with ISA to finish the enrollment.
  • RESIDENCE PERMIT APPOINTMENT. They check all your documents to ensure you don't have any detail missing when submitting to BSU. They also give IGC Merch freebies.
  • AFTER THAT, YOU'RE DONE! Keep on lookout for the events ISA hosts, and also don't forget that ISA has implemented a 20 euro fee for the events.
Is the program fully in English?
Yes. all core lectures are in English.
  • However, HSB offers extra modules for added ECTS and skills which are held in either English or German.
  • Some/Majority of administrative processes will be in German.
  • Basic German is strongly recommended for daily life.
How hard is it to find housing?
Everywhere will be difficult. The more specific you are with the housing you want, the harder it will be. Start looking 3–4 months before.
  • The university does not provide housing you have to work on your own to secure one.
  • The ISA team can provide some resources but they cannot guarantee you a slot.
  • Student dorms (Studierendenwerk) are the cheapest (with private studios costing as low as 310€).
  • WG-Gesucht, and Immoscout24 are the main platforms. You can also try Kleinanzeigen.
  • Scams exist. Never pay a deposit before seeing a contract.
What GPA / grades do I need to pass?
The German grading scale runs 1.0 (best) to 5.0 (fail).
  • You typically need at least 4.0 to pass a module.
  • A 2.0–2.5 is considered satisfactory.
  • A 1.6-1.9 is good.
  • A 1.0-1.5 is very good.
  • Ask your program coordinator for the exact rules, fail policies may vary.
Can I work while studying?
  • EU students: yes, freely.
  • Non-EU students on a student visa: up to 120 full days or 240 half-days per year.
  • Working student (Werkstudent) contracts are the standard structure, they're tax-efficient and legal.
  • Check with the Ausländerbehörde if unsure about your visa conditions.
What's the networking like?
It depends on how much you put in. Cohort size is usually small enough that everyone knows each other. Some programs also have company visits and excursions to promote networking.
  • ISA Team of IGC regularly hosts events and activites for multiple programs to connect with each other.
  • Alumni networks vary in quality. MDT is a fairly new course so alumnis are not quite established yet.
  • It's worth joining clubs if you find soemthing that interests you, you can join sports clubs.
Are exams retakeable?
Generally, yes. A second failure has more serious consequences. Your program coordinator can walk you through it.
How do I get a Anmeldung (city registration)?
You must register your address at the local Einwohnermeldeamt within 14 days of moving in. Book an appointment online. You need: passport, rental contract or landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). This unlocks your bank account, health insurance, and tax ID.
  • Appointment time slots can take a long time due to the queues so your best bet is the following:
  • (1) WALK IN:Currently, the walk-in schedule is on a Monday Afternoon or Wednesday Morning
  • (2) MORNING APPOINTMENT LOOK-OUT: If you don't wan tto stand outside for a long time during walk-in, you can wait every morning (7AM-ish) to see early appointments that were cancelled by other people.
Do I need a German bank account?
Yes, for practical purposes. Most landlords require a German bank account for rent.
Is the thesis / capstone project manageable alongside coursework?
Currently, the program is designed to have Thesis to be at the last semester as a stand-alone in order for students to focus on it.
